Introduction

The Kawartha Trans Canada Trail Cooperative project involved 4 major components: data collection, creation of a database, production of a promotional wall map, and this website.

The majority of the data for this project was collected manually using Garmin eTrex GPS receivers to record specific coordinates of features and attributes along the trail. Other data sources include the MNR, LIO and DMTI for data such as the roads and water bodies of the area. As well, air photos were obtained from Trent University and digitized to obtain data on adjacent agriculture, wetlands and forest areas. Following completion of data collection, a database was created in Microsoft Access to store and organize the collected data.

With this organized data, a large scale wall map was created highlighting the historical and cultural features of the trail, as well as local businesses, nearby schools, access points, and other attractions.

The last piece of the project is this website. Its purpose is to outline the extent of the project and to allow information about the trail to be readily available to the public. This site hosts an interactive flash map, as well as links to downloadable large scale maps of the trial.
